Rose in Vale

There is a 'comfortable country house' feel at James and Sara Evans's 'traditional, charming' hotel, an elegant, extended Georgian manor house in a peaceful wooded valley. 'We were impressed,' a regular Guide correspondent said this year. 'The hotel is well run by the hard-working Sara, who seems to do everything from Reception to the laundry, and the affable James, who serves in the bar.' Guests have use of a drawing room with 'deep chairs and sofas, an open fire'; there are woodland walks, 'beautifully kept' large gardens and a heated outdoor pool and hot tub in the extensive grounds. In the 'bright and spacious' Valley restaurant, chef Mark Firth serves a 'very good' daily-changing menu using local produce, perhaps ham hock terrine, home-made piccalilli; duo of lamb, dauphinoise potatoes. Individually decorated bedrooms vary in size; a large bedroom in the extension had 'a superb bed; a well-appointed tea tray with a teapot (bliss); two good armchairs and glossy magazines'. Breakfast has fresh fruit and fruit compote, 'lots of lovely toast'; scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. The Coastal Path is nearby.
  • Standards of comfort and service usually come at a much higher price. It has large, well-planted grounds. Our room was a cosy refuge, large, with a super-comfy bed. Staff are well trained, polite, and efficient without seeming to hurry. Dinner was very good. Breakfast was top notch.

  • The hotel has had a new wing added, accessed by a ramp; a lift has also been added. Flat-screen TVs have been installed in bedrooms. Our room was large, the bed was comfortable, and there were white fluffy towels and bathrobes in the bathroom. Only basic tea bags and instant coffee. The dining room was large but not busy. A reasonable choice on the menu; starters were good but main courses were slightly overcooked. Bacon and sausages at breakfast were also overcooked but good bread and excellent muesli. D,B&B price is good value for money but there are several additional charges. An envelope is left in the room for staff tips. The staff were without exception very helpful and friendly.

  • Food and service first class. Reception very helpful and beds comfortable. But the bedroom design was poor.
