'Comfortable, in a restful, attractive and convenient situation', this Georgian manor house is run as a traditional country hotel by James and Sara Evans. Bedrooms and hallways have recently been refreshed. On the edge of a village on the north Cornish coast, it is in a peaceful wooded valley (home to badgers, buzzards, woodpeckers and herons). Chef Colin Hankins cooks modern dishes using Cornish produce. 'A constant delight to eat his food.' Drawing room, bar, Valley restaurant (classical background music; resident pianist Sat night); lift; function facilities. 10-acre grounds with outdoor pool (rebuilt in 2011, 'a tremendous asset to the hotel'); ponds. Dogs welcomed, by arrangement. 23 bedrooms (2 in annexe; 2 suitable for disabled). B&B £55--£125 per person; D,B&B £80--£150

  • The hotel has had a new wing added, accessed by a ramp; a lift has also been added. Flat-screen TVs have been installed in bedrooms. Our room was large, the bed was comfortable, and there were white fluffy towels and bathrobes in the bathroom. Only basic tea bags and instant coffee. The dining room was large but not busy. A reasonable choice on the menu; starters were good but main courses were slightly overcooked. Bacon and sausages at breakfast were also overcooked but good bread and excellent muesli. D,B&B price is good value for money but there are several additional charges. An envelope is left in the room for staff tips. The staff were without exception very helpful and friendly.
