Rose in Vale

In a peaceful wooded valley, this Georgian manor house is a country hotel run by owners James and Sara Evans. 'It is very traditional and charming (no edgy decor here),' says a Guide inspector in 2013. 'The standards of comfort and service are high; the staff were efficient without ever seeming to hurry us.' An extension has been added: 'It is totally in keeping; the effect is of a comfortable country house rather than a formal stately home.' A large bedroom in the extension had 'a superb, comfy bed, good bedlinen; a well-appointed tea tray with a teapot (bliss); two good armchairs and glossy magazines made it a cosy retreat'. In the Valley restaurant, the chef, Anthony Theobald, uses local produce for seasonal dishes like chicken and thyme risotto; roast Cornish brill, smoked haddock and shellfish chowder, buttered spinach. 'Dinner was excellent; presentation was pleasantly straightforward.' There are well-planted gardens, woodland walks and an outdoor swimming pool in the grounds. The drawing room has 'deep chairs and sofas, an open fire'. Breakfast includes fresh fruit, compotes, 'lots of lovely toast; irresistible smoked salmon and scrambled eggs'.
  • Standards of comfort and service usually come at a much higher price. It has large, well-planted grounds. Our room was a cosy refuge, large, with a super-comfy bed. Staff are well trained, polite, and efficient without seeming to hurry. Dinner was very good. Breakfast was top notch.

  • The hotel has had a new wing added, accessed by a ramp; a lift has also been added. Flat-screen TVs have been installed in bedrooms. Our room was large, the bed was comfortable, and there were white fluffy towels and bathrobes in the bathroom. Only basic tea bags and instant coffee. The dining room was large but not busy. A reasonable choice on the menu; starters were good but main courses were slightly overcooked. Bacon and sausages at breakfast were also overcooked but good bread and excellent muesli. D,B&B price is good value for money but there are several additional charges. An envelope is left in the room for staff tips. The staff were without exception very helpful and friendly.

  • Food and service first class. Reception very helpful and beds comfortable. But the bedroom design was poor.
