The Three Lions

Once a farmhouse, this restaurant-with-rooms has a quiet setting surrounded by fields on the northern edge of the New Forest national park. The owners, Mike and Jayne Womersley, 'friendly without being nosy', are much liked. The main building has a bar, small lounge area, intimate restaurant and conservatory. Bedrooms overlook two acres of gardens and the forest beyond; four are in a wooden single-storey chalet-style building in the grounds. Children are 'warmly' welcomed: cots and a baby-listening service are available and there is a play area in the garden (which also has a hot tub). Guests with mobility problems have praised the help they received. There are no printed menus: guests order from a portable blackboard which is taken around the bar and restaurant. Mr Womersley's cooking style is British/French, based on local produce where possible; dishes might include asparagus and wild mushrooms; trimmed loin of lamb and crispy bits. The room price includes continental breakfast; cooked dishes cost extra. Access is limited outside restaurant opening hours; guests should confirm arrival times in advance. More reports, please.
  • We would endorse all that is written in the current Guide. Jayne is an excellent host and we enjoyed a relaxing dinner and bed and breakfast. They are very experienced and .knowledgeable of the local situation.

  • Plenty of parking space behind The Three Lions, which looks like a pub, but is actually a restaurant-with-rooms. If you arrive outside restaurant hours a notice on the front door asks you to ring the bell. Jayne Womersley answered and gave us a very friendly reception. Our bedroom and bathroom were spacious, well-appointed in ‘country living’ style’. The décor in the bar and restaurant is old-fashioned in the best sense, cosy and warm, fresh flowers on tables. The blackboard menu features best local produce, much of it organically grown. Our mushroom starter was delicious: turbot was perfectly cooked. The wine list contained some famous vintages. The breakfast table was laid with a pretty cloth, orange juice in a jug, and fresh fruit beautifully cut and arranged; bread, croissants, jam and marmalade all home made. Jayne and Mike Womersley are so professional that they create a relaxed ambience.
