La Sablonnerie

A pony and trap transports visitors from the ferry to this 'unusual small hotel' on a charming, car-free island noted for its abundant flora and fauna. Elizabeth Perrée is the 'welcoming' host, aided by 'friendly, attentive' staff. 'It was superb - like stepping back into the past, with no television and no Wi-Fi,' said a visitor this year. The whitewashed building, a long, low farmhouse dating back to the 16th century, is surrounded by secluded cottage gardens with a croquet lawn; the flowerbeds are bright with lupins, hollyhocks and hydrangea in season. 'Eating lunch in the garden is the nearest thing I know to paradise.' The simple, rustic bedrooms are individually decorated; a self-contained cottage a short stroll from the main house is ideal for a family. 'Our favourite room, over the bar, has lovely views; we have never found it noisy.' Freshly caught fish and Sark lobster are specialities in the dining room, where chef Colin Day's 'excellent' daily-changing menus (perhaps ravioli of scallops, poached halibut, hollandaise) use butter, cream, meat, fruit and vegetables from the hotel's own farm and gardens.   • Our 21st holiday on Sark, and our umpteenth visit to this little paradise. It is still wonderful. The staff are always charming, polite and elegantly presented, like the food, which is superb: the style and portions are such that it is a renewed pleasure every day. We had a stunning lunch in the garden before getting the boat to Guernsey on our way home.

  • We had a superb few days at this unusual small hotel. It is like stepping back in the past with no television and no Wi-Fi. The staff are attentive and friendly and the owner, Elizabeth, very welcoming. Everything is spotless with new towels provided whenever they were used. The food is excellent with a new menu each night and the wines are very reasonable.

  • Still wonderful. Eating lunch in the garden is the nearest thing I know to Paradise. We always stay in the lovely room above the bar and have never found it noisy. Elizabeth greets returning visitors by name and gives them kisses. On departure we get kisses and a bottle of wine.

  • A slice of paradise. My husband and I had an amazing weekend. The hotel was charming, the decor beautiful, the food was delicious, the ambience was magical and Elizabeth and her wonderful team were great. A unique hotel on a unique and tranquil Island.
