Swinton Park

Review

'A good balance is struck between being child friendly and offering adults the space to get away from the little monsters,' says a parent visiting this creeper-clad, 17th-century castle (Grade II* listed). 'The most amazing hotel I have stayed in,' wrote another. Set on a 'spectacular' huge estate, it is the family home of Mark and Felicity Cunliffe-Lister who run it as a luxury hotel; Andrew McPherson is the manager. 'Staff are unfailingly friendly, down to earth.' For children there is a playroom with toys, ducks to feed, a tree house. Adults can enjoy a wide range of activities in the grounds (see below), and dine alone in the evenings (babysitting provided). There is also a cookery school and a spa. The large reception rooms have antique furniture, family portraits, mirrors, rugs on polished floors. The restaurant, Samuel's, has a gold-leaf ceiling, mahogany panelling, an open fire. 'The food is outstanding': chef Simon Crannage serves a seasonal market menu, eg, local duck royale; estate venison with garden vegetables. There are 'stunning views' from many of the spacious bedrooms. All have Wi-Fi access; four have 'disabled-friendly fittings'. Good walking all around: 'We liked the suggested walks within the grounds.' The castle has an eco-friendly laundry and a 'carbon-neutral' wood-chip boiler.
