Talland Bay Hotel

'In a magical setting overlooking a secluded bay', this old manor house returns to the Guide under a new owner, Vanessa Rees, who has renovated throughout. 'It is a very well-run place,' says the nominator (a regular Guide correspondent). 'The food is exceptionally good. The decor is eccentric, with much modern art and furniture (if some of the ornaments might be kitsch, they are within the spirit of amusement).' The candlelit lounge has zebra-print sofas and burgundy armchairs. In the wood-panelled dining room (which has sea views and modern, velvet-striped high-backed chairs), Dan Watkins's daily-changing menu of 'imaginative' dishes might include roast fillet of beef, savoury bread-and-butter pudding. A lighter brasserie menu is served in the bar at lunchtime and in the evenings. The bedrooms vary in size, aspect and decor. 'Our sea-facing room was comfortable and had an OK bathroom.' Three rooms have direct access to the garden; three cottages (one with two bedrooms) are suitable for families. Visiting pets are greeted with treats (there are two house dogs and two house cats). (Janet Walker)

  • Everything was excellent. Friendly staff, comfortable and spotless room. The food was well presented, delicious and varied.
