Howard's House

César award in 2010

In a fold in the Wiltshire hills, this mellow stone dower house with a charming hillside garden is run as a small hotel by a partnership that includes the chef, Nick Wentworth. His mother-in-law, Noële Thompson, is the 'courteous' manager. 'A delightful place', it stands close to the church in a pretty village of stone houses. The 'welcoming' lounge has sofas around a huge fireplace; exposed beams, pictures of hunting scenes (the hotel is popular with shooting parties). The 'good-size' bedrooms have pastel colours, floral curtains; all have been recently refurbished. A room overlooking the garden was 'delightful and comfortable'. A large room at the top of the house has a four-poster bed, a white sofa. Mr Wentworth uses seasonal ingredients for his modern dishes, eg, hand-dived Cornish scallops, Laverstoke Park Farm black pudding, celeriac and apple syrup; loin of Fonthill roe deer, beetroot gratin, shallot purée, juniper and port jus. 'Beautiful cooking, well matched to the season. The service was impeccable.' In warm weather, meals can be taken on a flagstone terrace in the garden. There is excellent walking in the valley. (RP)
  • Our party if ten had three very comfortable nights at this small hotel in a pretty, quiet village. It has a very pretty garden. We were made welcome from start to finish. Three excellent dinners.
