'A delightful place in a perfect English village', this small hotel, a wisteria-clad stone dower house, stands by a quiet road in front of a 'charming' hillside garden. 'Well-nigh perfect,' is a comment this year. It is independently owned by a partnership that includes the chef, Nick Wentworth; Noële Thompson is the 'courteous' manager. Visitors like the 'welcoming' lounge, which has sofas, a huge fireplace; 'the feel of a private country home'. The bedrooms are 'of a good size'; they have pastel colours, floral curtains. 'Our room, overlooking the beautiful garden, was delightful and comfortable.' Nick Wentworth uses locally sourced ingredients in modern European dishes, eg, lasagne of wild rabbit, tarragon, wholegrain mustard; halibut, braised lentils, roasted shallots, Madeira jus. 'Beautiful cooking, well matched to the season. The service was impeccable at dinner and breakfast.' In warm weather, meals can be taken on a flagstone terrace in the garden.
