Trigony House

In a 'lovely setting of garden and woodland', this distinguished Edwardian shooting lodge is run as a small country hotel by owners Adam and Jan Moore. She is a 'chatty and helpful' hostess, say inspectors in 2012. The light wood-panelled hall has an elegant staircase with a viewing balcony halfway up. The public rooms are 'cosy' with roaring fires, board games, period furniture. Traditionally furnished bedrooms vary in size; some have lovely views. 'Our large room had a conservatory sitting room, big bed, well-equipped bathroom (power shower).' The wood-floored dining room overlooks the pretty garden with a terrace for alfresco eating. Mr Moore, the chef, takes his inspiration from Elizabeth David, using much home-grown and organic produce. 'Dinner was delicious. We had pigeon breast on light, tasty haggis; venison two ways; profiteroles with crunchy praline filling; good local cheeses.' There are simpler dishes on the bar menu. Breakfast is, 'if anything, over-generous'. Good walking and fishing nearby. Trigony is 'extremely' dog-friendly, 'though your pooch may have to take second place to the doe-eyed resident golden retriever, Rosie'. (Helen Pank, and others)
  • After several disappointing ‘country house hotels’ had failed to live up to expectations, the ancient courtyard, the Virginia creeper climbing up the walls and the friendly four-legged welcome were all perfect. The staff were great, the rooms were spotless and inviting. The food was amazing (my husband insisted the chef was told that it was the best venison he’d ever eaten). Beautiful, varied walks - guides and maps provided. The attention to detail was fantastic, and made our six-year old trailhound feel like one of the family.

  • Our second visit to this lovely old hotel. Sublime food, wine and local beer. Dinner in the dinning room overlooking the garden, or the bar with log fires, is not to be missed. The bedrooms are comfortable, as is the lounge area. Our small terrier was made welome with doggy treats. Walks around the hotel are varied and safe. Dont forget binoculars for spotting red sqirrel and red kites.

  • The service and room standards were excellent. The icing on the cake was two things: the friendly staff, who showed respect but were pleasant and eager to please, and t The high standard of the food. The menu catered for all tastes and was changed each evening. The atmosphere was warming, and the odd dog around helped to provide the relaxed atmosphere.

  • The second time we have stayed at this hotel with our two Pyrenean Mountain Dogs. We use it as a base for the dog shows in Edinburgh. The staff are extremely friendly and accomodating of our big dogs. Always welcome and greeted as part of the family. Would recommend hotel to anyone, with or without dogs (small or giant). The walks around the hotel are lovely.

  • A small, first-class luxury hotel, hidden slightly from the main road. The surroundings are quiet and the rooms are first class. They provide everything you can think of, from information regarding local walks to where to shop. The food is first class, in a lovely dining room looking on to the tranquil gardens.

  • A gem of a hotel tucked into the often ignored southwest corner of Scotland. Wonderful food - crispy duck properly rendered with succulent meat and crispy skin, followed by inventive five spice salmon and wonderfully balanced coconut sauce. And seasoned succulent pigeon with wonderful local haggis followed by one of the best venison dishes we've tasted in ages. Relaxed dining room, with comfy chairs and great range of whisky afterwards! Crucially for a hotel, comfortable beds, peace and quiet and great 'power' rose shower for a morning wake up. We recommend and would return.

  • A lovely hotel with great service and fantastic food. Our room (5) could perhaps have done with a bathroom re-furb, but aside from that I could not fault it. The Trigony is a very dog friendly, but do not let that put you off - the rooms are clean and welcoming, and the two resident dogs are good company! Stroll through the lovely gardens or step out of the back gate on to an agreeable country lane. Having worked up an appetite return for dinner and enjoy the results of the delicious aromas that were wafting around when you arrived.

  • A small, luxurious hotel with an excellent kitchen. The welcome was genuine, the staff were friendly. The rooms were comfortable and immaculate, fitted with period furniture. Log fires blazed in all public rooms. Our dog was made welcome by the resident canines and had her own welcome-pack. Plenty of grounds to walk the dog in, and poo-bags provided. The meals were of top quality, breakfast one of the best I have tasted.

  • The sign of a really good hotel is when you are left with fond memories of your stay. When I booked, the helpful receptionist made useful suggestions for our accomodation. I opted for Room 9. We were made very welcome, and offered excellent advice on local matters. The log fires in the lounge, dining room and bar added to the cosy atmosphere, and the special touches of home-made biscuits, china literary mugs and sparkling water in the room were much appreciated. The dinner menus were mouthwatering and the food to match, served in the intimate dining room where at breakfast you could spot the fresh produce being delivered from the local farmers. A special experience.
