The Five Arrows

Named after the family emblem (a shield with five arrows representing each of the Rothschild brothers who founded banks across Europe), this small hotel/restaurant is run by the Rothschild family trust for the National Trust. The elaborate half-timbered building (on the site of an old coaching inn) stands at the gates of Waddesdon Manor, the family's magnificent country retreat styled like a Loire château. Alex McEwen is the manager; Karl Penny is the chef. The bedrooms in the main house have a traditional decor; five spacious rooms have been added in a converted coach house in the grounds. They have high ceilings, beams, soothing colours. Fixed soap dispensers in the bathroom are 'a minor irritant'; rooms at the front might suffer from traffic noise. There is no guest lounge; a small bar has tables which might be taken for dinner. Everyone praises the cooking in the 'immaculate' dining room; the weekly-changing menu has modern European dishes like wild mushroom and thyme soup, truffle foam; pork loin medallions, confit potatoes, black pudding, pear, apple and cider jus. Hotel guests receive complimentary garden tickets to visit the manor.
  • The staff were friendly, the room was comfortable, the food good;, and the hotel had good vibes. We had the last room, overlooking the main road. Traffic noise was a hum and did not bother us. The rooms are away from the main house so you would need an umbrella in bad weather. We enjoyed a drink in the courtyard (there seemed to be no residents’ lounge). And we enjoyed both dinner and breakfast (a good cold buffet and wide choice of cooked dishes).

  • A comfortable hotel with good rooms and extremely friendly and helpful staff. Although on a busy road the hotel is surprisingly peaceful inside and our bedroom in the courtyard was very quiet. Good food in the restaurant and a complimentary glass of champagne added a nice touch. Rather limited lounge space.
