The Five Arrows

On the site of an old coaching inn, this 'immaculate' small hotel at the gates of Waddesdon Manor was built in 1887 to house the architects and craftsmen working on the manor itself. Like the historic house, the hotel is run by the Rothschild family trust for the National Trust; the manager is Alex McEwen. It is 'a broadly comfortable environment with helpful, cheerful staff,' say visitors this year. The individually designed bedrooms have antiques from the manor; those overlooking the courtyard (rather than the busy road in front) are the most tranquil. 'Our room was quiet and comfortable; there was not enough light for reading.' The 'pleasant' dining room has 'well-spaced tables'; chef Karl Penny's modern European menu (changed weekly) has some 'interesting choices', perhaps slow-cooked pork belly, poached Granny Smith; pan-fried fillet of trout, marinated tomatoes, pea shoot salad. 'Breakfast was excellent, with a full range of main dishes served promptly.' Less liked is the 'limited lounge space'. National Trust members qualify for a ten per cent discount on B&B rates.
  • A comfortable hotel with good rooms and extremely friendly and helpful staff. Although on a busy road the hotel is surprisingly peaceful inside and our bedroom in the courtyard was very quiet. Good food in the restaurant and a complimentary glass of champagne added a nice touch. Rather limited lounge space.

  • More restaurant-with-rooms than hotel. New manager ex Manoir aux Quat'Saisons has moved the establishment up a distinct notch. Underlying quality already there. Grade II listed, location at the gates of Waddesdon Manor, excellent wine list, good food and positive staff attitude. Two converted and very luxurious en suite rooms at rear of garden offset the disadvantages for light sleepers of the noise from the A41.
