Windlestraw Lodge

Above the River Tweed, this 'stunning' pink Edwardian house is run as a small hotel by the 'friendly and professional' owners, Alan and Julie Reid. They have restored many of the original features of the house, which was built in 1906 by a Borders mill owner for his Austrian bride. There is decorative wood panelling and, in a separate section, a two-foot-deep plaster frieze, in the dining room, where Alan Reid uses local meat and seafood for his much-praised daily-changing menu. Typical dishes: seared monkfish, sea bream and prawns, pancetta and pea shoots; rack of lamb, redcurrant, rosemary and claret sauce. 'Exceptionally yummy' puddings. The open-plan public rooms have family photographs and objets d'art, open fires; six distinct sitting areas. The bedrooms are 'smart, comfortable'. The McIntosh room, once the master bedroom, has sumptuous fabrics, a brass bed; an Edwardian bathtub in the bathroom. Breakfast has an extensive choice: perhaps prunes, apricots and berries in Earl Grey syrup; Mull Cheddar cheese omlette among the cooked options. Fishing and golf can be arranged, and there is good walking. (VF)
  • If, from the moment you walk in the door, you want to be inspired by a "home" that is beautifully decorated with many tasteful and original touches...if you appreciate being welcomed by a couple who have put their own special stamp on their home and then serve you with tea and the best ever home-made shortbread....if you enjoy delicious food at dinner and at breakfast...If you like to walk up the hills behind the hotel or drive to various attractions in the borders....then Windlestraw Lodge, high above Walkerburn, with wonderful views of the Tweed valley offers all of that. Julie and Alan are engaging, friendly and professional.
