Crockerton House

Value offers
Endorsed again this year, this Georgian house (Grade II listed) stands in 'beautiful' gardens overlooking the Wylye valley in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The owners, Christopher and Enid Richmond, have meticulously restored the house, preserving original features in the handsome hall and lounge. Visitors are greeted with complimentary afternoon tea and home-made cake (if they arrive before 5 pm); help is given taking baggage to the spacious first-floor bedrooms. The Officer's Room has a king-size bed; a private bathroom (with bath and walk-in shower) and a separate lavatory are off the corridor. The Heytesbury Suite has double-aspect windows over the gardens; the Silk Room is at the back facing a lane leading to the old mill. Dinner, served from Monday to Thursday by arrangement, is a set menu cooked by Mrs Richmond, perhaps West Country cheese soufflé; chicken with sage stuffing; chocolate brownies. Guests may bring their own wine. Breakfast has freshly squeezed fruit juices, home-made bread and preserves, organic ingredients for cooked dishes. A red cedar tree in the garden is more than 200 years old. (JW)
