The Strand House

Below this historic town, this small hotel is composed of two Grade II listed buildings (one 13th-century, the other Tudor). Guide readers have commented on the 'friendliness and enthusiasm' of the owners, Mary Sullivan and Hugh Davie. Inspectors agreed: 'She is a wonderful hostess, always kind, never inquisitive.' There are two lounges: the main one has intimate sitting areas and a log fire; a smaller room at the back is used as a reading room or for playing board games. The bedrooms (some are up steep steps) vary in size and character; several have a low ceiling. Larger rooms have an inglenook fireplace; one 'delightful' room has French doors opening on to the garden. Low beams can be a hazard. Three modern bedrooms were added in 2011 in a cottage in the grounds. Afternoon tea has fresh berries, sandwiches, home-made cake; the 'Strand House Special' includes champagne. In the evening, Mrs Sullivan cooks a daily-changing menu of English/Irish dishes, eg, local hot-smoked salmon, cucumber salad; organic venison stew, chestnuts, red wine and juniper berries. (RWB)
