Holbeck Ghyll

Built as a hunting lodge for Lord Lonsdale, this Arts and Crafts house stands in large grounds which slope down to the lake. Managed by Andrew McPherson, the owners have invested in considerable renovation. 'There is a constant programme of improvement in the house and the grounds, but it is not intrusive,' says a visitor returning in 2012. 'The service is exemplary and the food on song.' Another comment: 'The things that you expect from a hotel of this calibre are there: clean, well-appointed bedrooms, ample tea/coffee facilities and, a nice touch, a decanter of damson gin.' The rooms in a lodge and cottages in the grounds have 'superb views'. The entrance hall to the main house has stained glass, ornate fittings and wood carvings. Dinner orders are taken in two 'comfortable' lounges which overlook the lake. The chef, David McLaughlin, has a Michelin star for modern cooking: 'Delicious fishy starters; all meat is tender and tasty. Breakfasts are very good: with a wide choice of juices, fruits, cereals, pastries, bread.' (ST, and others)
  • We have been dining/staying at Holbeck Ghyll for some 15 years or so now and have nothing but praise for the way everyone is so welcoming and intent on making our stay seem special, which it always is. Attention to detail is always paramount and the chef and kitchen work wonders with the food.

  • A last-minute get-away and a real treat. A wonderful warm welcome and proper introduction to the hotel and facilities. A delightful afternoon tea in front of a roaring fire. The cottage we stayed in was cosy and warm with the added luxury of a turn-down service and a well- stocked fridge. I cannot fault the accommodation. The breakfast was also top quality, a wide choice and quality ingredients. The reason we chose the hotel was the restaurant, my 13th Michelin star, every bit as good as all the others, exquisite food, delightful, knowledge staff. Perfect luxury and perfect views of the surrounding countryside.

  • There is quiet efficiency and staff flexibility and attention to detail about the operation of the hotel. The staff were attentive without being overbearing. The food was excellent as befits the Michellin star rating. A nice personal touch was the presence of the General Manager in the lounges and dining rooms instead of some mystical figure ensconced in an ivory tower. We had the most enjoyable stay to celebrate our 61st wedding anniversary. An excellently run hotel.
