The Old Vicarage

The setting of Sarah and David Blakstad's hotel in a red brick Edwardian former parsonage is 'lovely, with wide views across open country', says a visitor this year. There is a manicured lawn, and statues and seats around old elms. Bedrooms vary in size and style; most have antique furniture, one has a Victorian four-poster bed, another a walnut half-tester. All contain a decanter of sherry, fresh milk and fruit. Each of the four rooms in the coach house has a private garden ('we could sit outside with a complimentary glass of sherry in the evening'). 'Our large room had a comfortable sitting area, a good-sized bed. The bathroom, which had a separate shower as well as a bath, was well equipped.' In the Orangery restaurant, the chef, Simon Diprose, serves a 'very good' seasonally changing menu of British dishes, eg, pork fillet with morels, garlic and marjoram ravioli. Breakfasts were 'extremely good, with tasty cooked dishes and freshly squeezed orange juice'. On Sunday evenings dinner is by arrangement only. (Mary Hewson, and others)
