Judges

Well away from the road in peaceful, wooded grounds with a stream and gardens (floodlit at night), this Victorian house (Pride of Britain) was built as a private residence and later became the residence for circuit judges. It is managed by Tim Howard ('friendly and charming') for the owners, the Downs family, who have converted the building into a hotel with sympathy and imagination. 'We loved our stay: our room was spacious but cosy, and the food was superb,' says a visitor in 2012. The chef, John Schwarz, serves 'excellent' modern dishes, perhaps 'perfectly cooked and attractively presented lobster with langoustines and crushed potatoes'. The bedrooms are furnished in keeping with the period: 'Our room had a lovely marble fireplace, two big armchairs, a large chest with cupboards and a minibar; all the usual modern equipment. The renovated bathroom was smart and well lit. A novelty was a goldfish, Finn, whom we were asked to talk to and feed.' A 'delicious' breakfast, served at table, has freshly squeezed orange juice, good unsalted butter and fresh fruits; 'plenty of cooked options from local fish to full Yorkshire'. (Rebecca Walker, and others)

  • We loved our stay. We were greeted at the door and checked in efficiently. Our four-poster room overlooked the entrance was spacious, yet cosy. Everything very clean, and extra touches made our stay special. The food in the restaurant and the bar is superb, as is the service. Breakfast was delicious, lack of abuffet table added to the "quality" feel.
