Judges

The 'care and attention to detail' are praised this year at this traditional hotel, a restored Victorian mansion in extensive grounds (that became a residence for circuit judges). Owned by the Downs family, it is managed by Tim Howard ('friendly and charming'). 'All is peaceful and quiet' in the extensive grounds, which have well-tended lawns, a kitchen garden; waterfalls and ornate bridges; natural woodland with pathways and shady seats. 'Charming' bedrooms have watercolours and prints in gilt frames, fresh flowers, a decanter of sherry and 'all the usual modern equipment'; three have a four-poster bed. 'A novelty was a goldfish, Finn, who we were asked to talk to and feed.' All the bathrooms have now been renovated, and work has begun on the bedrooms. The conservatory dining room is 'light and bright, with beautiful views over the gardens'; chef John Schwarz's 'excellent' modern dishes might include diver-caught scallop; caramelised foie gras, satay, radish, lime; English rose veal, wild mushrooms, sweetbread ragout. Breakfast has freshly squeezed orange juice, fresh fruits and 'plenty of cooked options'. Popular with wedding parties. (RW, and others)

  • Lovely to be back at Judges after 2 or 3 years absence. We were hoping that the standards were as good as our previous visits and we were not disappointed. We had our usual comfortable room - minus the goldfish unfortunately - the food and service in the dining room was excellent. The quality and presentation of the dishes was of a high standard. Breakfast also was served promptly. We have not got a bad word to say about this hotel - they have never let us down.

  • We loved our stay. We were greeted at the door and checked in efficiently. Our four-poster room overlooked the entrance was spacious, yet cosy. Everything very clean, and extra touches made our stay special. The food in the restaurant and the bar is superb, as is the service. Breakfast was delicious, lack of abuffet table added to the "quality" feel.
