'Just how a pub should be', Charles and Edmund Inkin's laid-back inn is on the road from Zennor towards Land's End. The bar and restaurant have an informal air: wooden tables and chairs, rugs on wooden floors; strong colours, 'lots of interesting artwork'. Visitors this year found the bar busy at lunchtime: 'The bright cheerful staff were on top of everything. We enjoyed two delicious starters with home-baked soda bread, the best I've tasted outside Ireland.' Chef Bruce Rennie uses local suppliers for his modern menus which have a good selection of dishes for vegetarians (eg, beetroot risotto, sage, walnuts). More work has been done on the bedrooms this year: they have fresh flowers, a Roberts radio (no television), Welsh blankets. Some face the Atlantic, others the moors. The largest room, at the back, has double-aspect windows; a large light bathroom. Breakfast ('simple but good') has Cornish apple juice, seasonal fresh fruit; the soda bread 'makes excellent toast'; home-made preserves and marmalade; kippers and full English.
