In an isolated position 'in wildest Cornwall' near Land's End, this old yellow-painted inn 'oozes character and generosity', says a visitor in 2013. 'There is something homely and likeable about this place with its open fires, wooden floors and plenty of reading material.' The owners, brothers Charles and Edmund Inkin, have promoted Chris Curnow, a local, to manager. This year there has been more refurbishment of the bedrooms: a new shower room has been fitted in two rooms, a bigger bathroom in the largest. 'Our simple room was cosy and warm; we lacked for nothing. There is (mercifully) no TV, just a radio; fresh flowers gave it a lived-in atmosphere.' Chef Matt Smith's seasonal menu can be taken in the restaurant or the bar: 'It is well above average pub grub without the pretentions of a smart restaurant. Breakfast has honest fare: Cornish apple juice; home-made soda bread and jams; a large farmhouse loaf; a proper full English or a kipper from Tregida smokehouse.' The Inkin brothers also run The Old Coastguard in nearby Mousehole (see entry). (John Rowlands)
  • We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely go back. Particularly liked the library of paperbacks in the room, the romantic view of the hills (and the cows in the morning walking up the road), the food and the friendly service. One note to pass on: it didn't bother us, but we could hear the live folk music in the bar in our room one evening - if this might disturb you it would be worth asking for a room not above the bar.
