Good Hotel Guide Review

‘A hotel with heart and soul’, this long-time favourite overlooking Cardigan Bay has been ‘well run’ by the Cave family and ‘unfailingly cheerful’ staff for more than a century. Guide readers, many regulars, praise the sense of continuity and the long-held standards. ‘My son (age 21) and I (age 54) were the youngest there for most of our stay. Did we care? Not one bit. The hotel is busier with young families during the school holidays, but it’s refreshing, out of season, to go somewhere that maintains tradition.’ Take your pick of the light, bright bedrooms, each ‘immaculately clean and welcoming’, many with views of the sea. ‘The ones with a balcony are ideal in the summer.’ (Ring to discuss room choices beforehand: guests in 2016 thought some single rooms weren’t to the standard of the doubles.) Food is ‘excellent’: ‘well-cooked’ fish; ‘generous’ breakfasts. ‘Although there is a dress code in the restaurant, the hotel takes a relaxed view.’ Head out with a packed lunch, or stay put and enjoy the many diversions – a swimming pool, a putting green and plenty more. Guest comments

"We have been visiting over the last 40 years, and the standard has not changed. Now, with a party ranging from 80(me)to six, we find it a real joy. The swimming pool, snooker and children’s room appeal to the grandchildren, while there is a quiet lounge to escape to for the adults. The bar lunch menu - delicious sandwiches and salads – makes you look forward to dinner. The menu changes daily, but always has one conservative and one more exciting main course. Service throughout is good. In the past I have found Reception inflexible; that has been remedied. Rooms are well-equipped and have glorious views from the front of the hotel. The Cave family put in a lot of effort, and it shows. " - Dorothy Brining - October 2013
"If only all hotels were run as well as this. All staff are well trained. Help is on hand for guests with disabilities. There are many quiet corners with comfortable armchairs. Comfortable beds. first-class reading lights. Food of a high standard. The dining room runs like clockwork. " - Ken & Mildred Edwards - May 2013
"We visited the hotel for the first time this weekend, and thoughly enjoyed the stay. I found the service first rate. The chambermaids, waitresses and bar staff were efficient and curteous. A stunning location with excellent food and pleny of choice. Spotless accommodation with comfortable beds. The decor is tasteful rather that modern, but that adds to the classic charm of the place. " - Jayne Whitfield - January 2012
"Our first impressions were of a nicely dated 30s, well-run, unostentatious establishment with staff who were happy to talk to you. The room had sea views. We felt immediately at home. Breakfast and dinner were good and speedily served Due to illness we unexpectedly had to cut our stay half way through our booking. The staff were marvellous. They simply asked my wife to pay for the time spent plus a few extras we had had and refused to apply additional charges. A hotel with heart and a soul. " - Peter Rogers - May 2014
