we are fortunate in the uk to be surrounded by some of the most interesting historic buildings relating to key events in history. our editor’s choice of historic hotels are full of tales of yesteryear and have unique characteristics, but all offer a luxurious hotel break. head to north yorkshire to stay at the majestic swinton park, a 19th century gothic castle and the ancestral seat of the earl of swinton. the luxury hotel has an authentic feeling with antiques and family portraits combining history with the warmth of a traditional english house. for another castle stay, visit the aptly-named star castle on the beautiful isles of scilly. this hotel is a star-shaped fortress built in 1593 but with modern facilities including an indoor heated swimming pool, gourmet dining and complimentary golf.
