Hotel Felix  (Shortlist*)

In a peaceful setting in extensive landscaped gardens five minutes' drive from the centre of Cambridge, this four star boutique hotel has a sleek interior enlivened with striking contemporary art. Shara Ross is the manager. The late Victorian yellow brick mansion has modern extensions; bedrooms (all with a large bed, and a bathroom with underfloor heating) are divided between the original mansion and the more recently added east and west wings. Chef Jose Graziosi serves Mediterranean-influenced dishes in the restaurant overlooking the south-facing terrace and garden; informal meals and afternoon tea are taken in the light and airy Orangery, the bar or on the pretty terrace during the summer months. Small lounge, bar, Graffiti restaurant; Orangery. Room service. Free Wi-Fi and parking. Background music. Civil wedding and partnership licence both inside and outside in the Gazebo; functions. 4-acre garden, terrace (alfresco dining). Children (cots) and dogs welcomed. 52 bedrooms (4 suitable for disabled). Per room B&B (continental) single from £178, double £215--£310. Full English breakfast £7.95. Dinner £33.
  • We had a delightful welcome from Shara (GM) on arrival. Our room was all we could expect. The bed was perfect. Bars and lounges were comfy, although we’d prefer no music. The staff everywhere were welcoming, attentive, well-trained and efficient. The dinner was reasonable, and we weren’t charged extra for a starter, as we had expected, because we hadn’t had any puddings and my husband hadn’t had a starter. The background noise from the road was slightly disturbing to us overnight, but it didn’t prevent a good night’s sleep. The housekeeping is very good but some of the fitments are beginning to show their age.
