A good base for exploring Constable country, this congenial restaurant-with-rooms is in a former 18th-century coaching inn, in a historic coastal village on the River Stour. It is run by chef/proprietor Sherri Singleton and her husband, David McKay. Thoughtfully equipped bedrooms (some with traffic noise) have dressing gowns, luxury toiletries and home-made biscuits; four have views down the Stour estuary. ‘Unpretentious’ menus focus on seafood; local beef, chicken and interesting vegetarian and vegan dishes are also available. The restaurant is popular with locals at Sunday lunch. Sherri Singleton also holds cookery workshops at the Mistley Kitchen next door (special room rates for those attending). Bar, restaurant (background jazz); ramp. Outdoor seating. Free Wi-Fi. Children (special menu, cot) and small/medium dogs (in 3 rooms; £5 per night charge) welcomed. 11 bedrooms (3 in annexe). Per room B&B £85–£145, D,B&B £95–£195.
