The Hoste

Variously a manor house, a coaching inn and the host of a livestock auction market, this 16th-century building is today the centrepiece of a sprawling hotel owned by Brendan and Bee Hopkins. Bedrooms are in the main house, a courtyard wing, Vine House across the green, and Railway House, a ten-minute walk away (where one of the rooms is in a refurbished railway carriage on the old train tracks). Each has a particular character: some main-house rooms have a terrace; Vine House rooms have antiques and gilt mirrors; those in the Railway House, more smartly decorated, have railway memorabilia. ‘Our courtyard room was slightly over the top – silver furnishings, silvery wallpaper – but the essentials were right: a large, comfortable bed, quality bedlinen, excellent lighting, a decent bathroom.’ Guests have a choice of eating places: in the dining room, James O’Connor, the chef, serves modern dishes (perhaps roast sea bass, crab ravioli, spinach, bisque sauce); informal meals may be taken in the conservatory, the garden room and, in good weather, the wisteria-clad walled garden. Breakfast has ‘exceptionally good’ local sausages; vegetarian options.
  • A well-managed hotel. Very good welcome, helpful staff, excellent food and facilities, but not cheap. Our room was spacious and well equipped, decor a bit OTT, but the essentials were right, good reading lights, large, comfortable bed, decent-sized bathroom. At dinner, fish was especially good. Breakfast also above average.

  • A good place in itself and also for visiting nearby coastal sites and villages. Standards maintained. Food still excellent. Good snack lunch in conservataory. Rooms all diffferent; no noise probem with those that overlook the street: one feels part of the village. Many pictures for sale.
