The Wentworth

Opposite the shingle beach in this small coastal town, Michael Pritt's 'well-situated', 'traditional and friendly' hotel attracts many return visitors. They like the 'personal attention of the owner and pleasant staff'. Individually decorated bedrooms, many with sea views, are divided between the main building and Darfield House across the road; those in the latter building have access to a sheltered walled garden. 'Our ground-floor room in Darfield House was not as large as others we have stayed in, but it was comfortable; the bathroom, with a walk-in shower, was very good.' Afternoon tea is taken in the public rooms (sofas, paintings, an open fire); the cake of the day is announced at Reception. For meals, guests may eat in the bar, the lounge, the elegant sea-facing restaurant or on the terrace in good weather. Chef (since early 2014) Jason Shaw produces dishes like prawn and crayfish salad; Darsham fillet steak medallions, peppercorn jus, gratin potatoes. Breakfast includes 'delicious muesli, good cooked (fine black pudding), superb bread and croissants'. (Jennifer Davis, Richard and Jill Burridge, Simon Rodway)
  • Our room at Darfield Housewas not as large as previous rooms we had stayed in at the Wentworth but it was comfortable and bathroom very good. The hotel is well situated and staff are very pleasant. The food was good, well cooked and presented.

  • Check-in smooth if impersonal. Bedroom decor a bit tired, but good lighting, plenty of coat hangers, free wi-fi, good-sized TV. Public areas well maintained. Food good but not outstanding. Good-value wine. Clean throughout, with cosy yet formal feel. Excellent staff, attentive and polite.

  • Comfortable public rooms, well-appointed single bedrooms, quiet and bright. Breakfast very good; good service. Dinner good but we thought the wine mark-up high. They are well attuned to the concerts.
