The Wentworth

Overlooking the fishing boats on the shingle beach, this ‘welcoming’ hotel has been run by three generations of the same family since 1920; Michael Pritt, the current owner, has been at the helm for 40 years. ‘Nothing changes: it is a real treat each time we visit,’ a regular visitor says. (The traditional atmosphere may not cater to all tastes: a guest this year thought some overall refurbishment was in order.) Another comment: ‘Excellent service.’ The hotel is popular with older guests who like the ‘comfortable’ rooms, ‘excellent’, long-serving staff and ‘continually good food, especially fish from Aldeburgh beach’. Public rooms have a ‘well-put-together’ mix of antique and modern furniture; afternoon tea, taken in the open-plan lounge, has a cake of the day. Many of the bedrooms in the main hotel have sea views; those in Darfield House, across the road, have access to a garden with outdoor seating. There are fresh flowers on the tables in the restaurant, where chef Jason Shaw’s British menus might include grilled East Coast plaice, buttered new potatoes, salsa verde. Breakfast is ‘excellent’. • We visit once or twice a year. The staff remember us and are always very friendly, and always welcome our dogs. Our room facing the sea is comfortable, well furnished, with plenty of storage space. The food is always good though service is sometimes slow when there are large parties. Michael Pratt is full of local knowledge

  • A warm welcome at this delightful family-run hotel right on the beach in the lovely town of Aldeburgh. Just 35 elegant bedrooms, coffee tea facilities, flat TVs brand new power showers. Local produce, some from fishing boats right outside, beautifully presented. the complimentary welcoming Pimm's was a bonus so was the cream tea for two on the terrace. We felt well cared for.

  • We regularly stay at the Wentworth, and also had our wedding anniversary family dinner there two years ago. As always the rooms are comfortable, the food excellent and the staff efficient and friendly. It maintains its relaxed country hotel feel.
