The Portobello

On an ‘elegant’ residential street in Notting Hill, this quirky little hotel returns to the main section of the Guide under the new ownership of Peter and Jessica Frankopan, whose small Curious Group of Hotels includes the Canal House in Amsterdam (see GHG website). They have repainted throughout, freshening some of the older colour schemes, and providing new carpets, curtains and chair covers. They have retained the eccentric features of many of the themed rooms which were much loved by an earlier generation of rock ’n’ roll celebrities. The rooms are now categorised as good, better, great and exceptional. The best rooms have a king-size bed, a view of the gardens at the back (not open to hotel guests), a sitting area. They have flamboyant colours and drapes; Alice Cooper, famously, is said to have kept a boa constrictor in the freestanding Edwardian bathing machine in Room 16. The corridors are narrow and some rooms are small (these have been cheered up this year). A continental breakfast and snacks are served in the large, light drawing room, which has an honesty bar.
  • The oppositr of bland. Nothing conventional about it. Good welcome. Our Moroccan-themed room was gabled. Clever use of mirrors created an atmosphere of light and space. The décor was quirky. A free-standing clawfoot bath at one end. Excellent lighting. A neat little bathroom. Breakfast can be taken in the bedroom or in a charming drawing room.
