Underleigh House

At their converted Victorian cottage and barn in the Peak District national park, Vivienne and Philip Taylor are ‘very helpful’ hosts, says a visitor this year. ‘They provided much local information, recommended local pubs and restaurants, even made reservations for us.’ The Taylors are committed to following good environmental practices: they have installed a photovoltaic solar system, and encourage biodiversity in the garden. Breakfast is tailored to allow guests to experience ‘some of the Peak District’s finest produce’. Served at a long communal table, it includes bacon and sausages from the village butcher, and ‘is quite a ceremony’. ‘You are given an explanation of the jams, mueslis, etc.’ Bedrooms upstairs have views over the hills. ‘Twitchers’ should ask for ground-floor Townhead: glazed doors on two sides lead to the garden, and have close views of the woodpeckers and tits that visit the hanging feeders. All rooms have a large bed, an en suite bathroom, tea/coffee-making facilities, a mini-fridge. There is good walking and mountain biking from the doorstep. Packed lunches and refreshments, and a place to dry waterproofs on return, are provided. (JM)
  • Excellent value for money, the rooms were everything said on the website. We were made very welcome when we arrived and enjoyed the afternoon tea offered.
