The Redesdale Arms

Value offers
Returning visitors were ‘delighted’ this year by this old coaching inn, on the main street of a medieval market town. Robert Smith is the ‘hands-on’ owner/manager, who greets his guests with a ‘warm welcome’; the staff provide ‘terrific’ service. Dating back to 1650, the mellow Cotswold stone building has an oak-beamed interior; there are old passages in the bars and restaurant, and an open fire in the residents’ lounge. James Hitchman is the new chef, cooking ‘excellent’ modern British dishes in the restaurant, perhaps pan-fried Brixham sea bass fillet, wild mushroom risotto, truffle oil. Bedrooms in the main house are decorated (‘appropriately’) in traditional country style; those in the converted stable block, a short walk across the courtyard, are more modern. ‘Ours was very comfortable, with close attention to detail throughout, especially the lighting.’ The rooms vary in size: some courtyard rooms have a private garden, lounge or balcony; junior suites with a sofa bed can accommodate a family. Breakfast has hot and cold buffets ‘to suit every taste’; hot toast is brought to the table. ‘An ideal situation for exploring the Cotswolds.’(John Frood, Dr Malcolm Godfrey)
  • Goes from strength to strength. Management is hands on; staff are friendly and efficient; rooms are appropriately furnished and very comfortable; food is excellent.

  • Warm welcome from hands-on co-owner and manager, Rober Smith. Terrific service. Excellent food. Since our last visit there are new bedrooms, very comfortable; renovated restaurant; wider choice at breakfast
