Three Choirs Vineyards  (Shortlist*)

On a working vineyard and winery (one of the largest in Britain), this restaurant-with-rooms has 70 acres of cultivated vines to explore. Guided tours take in the history and processes of wine-making, with opportunities to taste the results. Bedrooms are in a single-storey block beside the restaurant; each has French doors opening on to a small private patio. Five hundred yards from the main building, three rooms are in lodges among the vines, overlooking a string of ponds (continental breakfast hampers are delivered to these rooms). Local produce accompanies the wines in the popular restaurant, which has a large log-burning stove and views over the vine-clad valley. Barbecues are cooked on the terrace in fine weather. Lounge, restaurant, wine shop. Free Wi-Fi (in public areas). No background music. Wedding facilities. 2 miles N of Newent. 11 bedrooms (all on ground floor; 1 suitable for disabled). Per room B&B from £140, D,B&B from £199. Closed Christmas, 1–15 Jan.
  • The setting is lovely. The hotel and restaurant were pleasantly busy. Our room was in a low-rise, purpose-built brick block that wasn’t very inspiring from the outside, but it was large (a suite, really) with lovely views on to the vineyard below. It had fairly old-fashioned furniture in shades of maroon and cream, a big, comfortable bed, lots of fluffy towels, a small flat-screen TV. A sofa had been made into a bed for our son. The bathroom was enormous but utilitarian. Dinner was in a cosy room with lots of wine racks and vineyard views. Food was very good; they knocked up very good sausages and mash for our child. We slept well – in total silence – and breakfast the next day was excellent. Service throughout was friendly and efficient. But the approach to guests came across as a little impersonal.

  • Our reasonably large room had black lacquer furniture, comfortable armchairs, private minipatio with view of vineyards beyond. In the restaurant, food and service were excellent. Winess reasonably priced.
