The Star Inn

‘A very comfortable refuge.’ Andrew Pern’s characterful inn regains its place in the Guide this year thanks to a positive report from a trusted correspondent in 2015. The medieval inn is in a ‘quiet, attractive’ village in the North York Moors. Its Michelin-starred restaurant occupies the main building; in the Cross House Lodge opposite, individually styled bedrooms have various quirks, such as a rope-slung bed or a piano. ‘My large room had a central snooker table, and quality antique-reproduction furnishings; a single bed frame doubled as a second sofa. There was a good supply of magazines and books; a tea tray had chocolate bars and shortbread biscuits. A useful guide included details of walks and expeditions.’ In the restaurant, Andrew Pern and Steve Smith’s modern Yorkshire cooking might include ‘good’ black pudding bread; ‘nicely rare’ sirloin steak. Presided over by two ‘splendid’ candelabras, breakfast in the Wheelhouse is ‘an experience not to be missed’: slices of salmon, cheese and ham; pots of jam, lemon curd and marmalade; a slab of honeycomb; ‘beautifully smoked’ bacon and ‘scrambled eggs that melted in the mouth’.
