‘A model of what a country hotel should be.’ In a historic village on the edge of the North York Moors, Bertie Wood, his mother, Jane, and brother, Tom, run their ‘lovely’ traditional hotel in this creeper-covered 17th-century farmhouse. The Woods are the ‘most welcoming’, ‘hands-on’ hosts; their staff are ‘beyond praise’. Overlooking the terrace and the ‘delightful’ rose garden, the lounge has an open fire, armchairs and lots of books; bedrooms are ‘old-fashioned but spotlessly clean and comfortable’. In the dining room, chefs Paul Cattaneo and Sandra Thurlow serve ‘first-class’, traditional English dishes, perhaps roast rack of Kirkbymoorside lamb, Yorkshire sauce. ‘It is remarkable that they manage a completely different menu every evening, but when we particularly enjoyed some halibut, they were happy to provide it again the following night.’ Tea and ‘delicious’ warm scones with butter, cream and jam are served every afternoon; they may be taken on the terrace in good weather. ‘Superb walking on the moors from the door; a truly charming hotel, unusual in this day and age.’ (John and Cherry Hopkins, and others)
  • This is a lovely hotel. Our bedroom was quite large. D,B&B rates include tea and delicious warm scones with jam and cream. They manage a completely different dinner menu every evening. No long waits between courses. Wines reasonably priced. The garden is very attractive, and the staff are beyond praise. A model of what a country hotel should be.

  • We were delighted to return. The lounge and our bedroom are well furnished and most comfortable. The food is first class with good choice. A delightful garden. But what really makes it special is the Wood family, most welcoming, hands-on, which makes all the difference.
