Millgate House

Value offers

A beautiful house with lovely things’, Austin Lynch and Tim Culkin’s early Georgian home stands just off the square of this market town on the edge of the Dales. Its sheltered garden (‘full of interest’) was chosen by Alan Titchmarsh as one of Britain’s best gardens in 2015. Heavily planted, it has terraces which lead down to the fast-flowing River Swale. The owners, who are ‘eager to share their knowledge of the area’, have packed the ‘magnificent’ drawing room with an eclectic collection of antiques, fine silver and china, souvenirs, books and original paintings. These treasures spill over into the bedrooms, two of which face the gardens. The third bedroom has its own bathroom across the hall. An ‘excellent’ breakfast, served with silver cutlery at mahogany tables in a well-proportioned dining room, has an extensive buffet of fresh fruit, cereals and croissants. Cooked choices include kippers, locally sourced bacon and sausages, and eggs cooked to order. Dinner is served only to groups of 16 or more. The owners, who have two whippets, welcome visiting dogs.
  • What a gem of a place to stay. A warm welcome, gorgeous antique furniture. Stylish rooms in a comfortable way. Breakfast was outstanding with a superb array of fresh fruits and one of the best breakfasts we have enjoyed anywhere.Even on a drab October day the garden looked beautiful. Tim and Austin are wonderful hosts.

  • They could not have made us more welcome, from booking to attention throughout our stay. The room was excellent, and we had full use of the magnificent lounge, dining room and gardens. Welcoming conversations throughout made a marvellous visit.

  • As good as ever. A house and garden full of interest. The owners are full of information about the area. Breakfast food set a high standard.
