'Lovely to be back at Judges,' says a regular Guide correspondent, returning this year to this restored Victorian mansion, once a residence for circuit court judges. 'We were hoping that standards were as high as ever and we were not disappointed; they have never let us down.' Tim Howard is the 'charming' manager. The house stands in extensive grounds with waterfalls, ornate bridges, well-tended lawns and pathways with shady seats in natural woodland. There is a panelled bar and a lounge filled with antiques. 'The food and service in the conservatory dining room was excellent; the quality and presentation of the dishes was of a high standard.' Chef John Schwarz promises 'no garnishing for garnishing's sake' in his modern menus, which might include dishes like game mosaic, quince, pistachio biscotti; cod loin, creamed potato, shellfish ragout. Bedrooms are individually decorated and furnished; some rooms have a four-poster bed. 'Our room overlooked the entrance and was very spacious yet had a cosy, comfortable feeling. Complimentary brandy and biscuits made our stay extra special.' The 'delicious' breakfast is 'served promptly'. (William Wood, and others). Judges is a member of Pride of Britain hotels.

  • A long, smooth driveway through manicured parkland leads to the imposing front entrance of this fine country house hotel. Cheerful girls front the reception. The friendly Turkish restaurant manager appeared and took our cases. Our sumptuous room was spacious, with a deep sofa, wide two-seater armchair facing the wide flat-screen TV. There was milk in a fridge for tea/coffee making, fresh fruit, sherry, etc. The bed, on a raised dais, was huge. The modern bathroom was large, well lit, immaculate. The free Wi-fi, worked well. There are lots of comfortable sofas and armchairs in the lounge. The service throughout, by un-starchy staff, proved exemplary both at dinner and breakfast. The dinner menu was interesting and the cooking was excellent. In the morning the view from the conservatory was delightful. A good cooked breakfast was served by an affable local lady who has been with the Downs family for over 20 years.

  • Had a fabulous weekend here. Our room was lovely - four poster bed and jacuzzi bath. Some nice little touches including complimentary sherry, chocolates, fruit and homemade biscuits. The food was superb - we had canapés each evening followed by three delicious courses. Breakfast was equally as good. The staff were polite, helpful, friendly and extremely attentive.

  • This is an outstanding hotel, with accommodation, meals, facilities, and staff all to a very high standard. The meals are a gastronomic experience from start to finish. For a relaxing, away-from-it-all break, this hotel cannot be faulted.

  • Lovely to be back at Judges after 2 or 3 years absence. We were hoping that the standards were as good as our previous visits and we were not disappointed. We had our usual comfortable room - minus the goldfish unfortunately - the food and service in the dining room was excellent. The quality and presentation of the dishes was of a high standard. Breakfast also was served promptly. We have not got a bad word to say about this hotel - they have never let us down.
