Lindeth Fell

2009

Nothing stands still,’ say the Kennedy family, who have decided to run their country house on the fells overlooking Lake Windermere as a ‘luxury B&B’ rather than a hotel. They have turned the restaurant into a bar and lounge. Dinner is no longer served: afternoon tea, which can be taken from 12.30 pm, has been expanded, and a range of cold platters (fish, meat, cheese and ploughman’s) can be taken in the bar, the lounges, on the terrace or in the bedroom. Also new in 2015 is a biomass boiler; Wi-Fi reception has been upgraded in the bedrooms; all rooms have a decanter of sherry, and master rooms have been given a Nespresso coffee machine. Diana Kennedy and her daughters, Sheena and Joanna, are ‘charming and friendly as usual’, and the house is ‘welcoming and comfortable’, say returning visitors. The drawing rooms have deep sofas; one has books and magazines for guests who want to read. The bedrooms, which vary in size, are individually styled. Breakfast has a well-stocked buffet and a wide choice of cooked dishes.
  • Spacious lounges combined with excellent service make this a must in the Lake District. Being a single guest does not mean a downgrade; in a single room one still gets full treatment. Food is good. Breakfast has wide choice, dinner has a menu changing monthly, but with specials changed every day. All delicious. A lovely, friendly atmosphere.

  • Another visit to our old favourite. Our room on the second floor was spacious, with a grand view over Windermere. The bathroom was very small with just a shower. Our only problem was with the sloping roof - it was awfully easy to bash the head! We thought the food had gone up another notch: soup now appears as both a starter and in the intermediate course instead of sorbet. Most aspects of the menu change daily. The fillet steak was superb, as were the chips. The soups are always good. The biggest change was on the vegetable front: entrées are now accompanied by a few appropriate vegetables/potato-shape, and the menu offers an additional side-dish of vegetables if requested. So much better, less waste. Having stayed there for several years now, I can recognize a number of staff -- a good sign.

  • It is one of the rare places where one feels totally relaxed, and where customers are really valued as individuals, always addressed by their correct surname. Sheena, one of the Kennedy daughters, is now the manager, and does this with great charm and efficiency. The remarkable Mrs Kennedy is often in in the kitchen to cook some of her personal traditional pudding recipes. The cuisine had improved since our last visit: the food was good modern British cooking in portions copious enough to satisfy a fell walker. The tables are elegantly laid; service is very pleasant, by well-trained staff. Bedrooms are comfortable and immaculate. They are modernising the bathrooms. The gardener keeps the grounds well cared for.
