Overwater Hall

César award in 2015

Deer and red squirrel may be seen on the approach to this ‘comfortable, friendly hotel’ in the northern Lake District. The Grade II listed Georgian mansion is run in an informal style by the owners Stephen Bore and Angela and Adrian Hyde. Dogs are ‘genuinely’ welcome at no extra charge (the Guide award was for dog-friendly hotel): they have the run of the 18 acres of grounds including a woodland broad walk, and are allowed in bedrooms and one of the two lounges (though ‘not on chairs, please’). Human visitors also enjoy the service: ‘Angela and her team couldn’t have been more helpful.’ Afternoon tea is served with home-made biscuits: ‘The shortbread is superb.’ The ‘really comfortable’ bedrooms are ‘well provisioned’ (flowers, fresh milk), and have a ‘lovely’ bathroom. A ground-floor room opens on to the garden; unusual turret rooms, with their curved walls and huge windows, have great character. Adrian Hyde’s locally sourced menu is ‘as good as ever’; perhaps roast pork belly, parsnip and apple rösti; butternut squash risotto with piperade. Breakfast has Aspatrian eggs, Wigton bacon, Frizington kippers. (M and AS)
  • Less than two years ago we adopted our neighbour's dog: the neighbour had terminal cancer, and he asks us to take care of his nine-year-old Jack Russell, Mick, when the inevitable happened. We are now into 'dog-friendly' holidays. We stayed at Overwater in June 2015 and it was the most peaceful, relaxed holidays we have had. Everything was perfect, warm, friendly 'lived in' feel to the hotel, excellent rooms, food, service, couldn't fault anything.

  • Very friendly welcome for us and our dog. Very comfortable room and superb food. All staff very attentive. Most useful to be warned about the attacking buzzard across the field!

  • A fine example of a Good Hotel. We enjoyed the warm welcome and discreet attentive service from Angela, who is the perfect hostess. The attention to detail with many individual touches sets this hotel apart from many in its class. Chef's expertise with flavours and food combinations is very evident and it is a fine-dining experience for hearty appetites after days out in this lovely area.

  • Love the place Isolated part of the Lake District. Rooms comfortable with lovely bathrooms. Adrians food as good as ever. The place welcomes dogs and we were beautifully looked after. Will be back!!

  • What a wonderful hotel. We were quite late arriving; Angela and her team couldn’t have been more helpful. The food is so good, as was our room. The perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
