Family Hotel of the Year

‘There is something here for everyone,’ says a visitor this year to Wendy and Simon Bennett’s turreted Gothic castle in the Eden valley. A multi-generational party (aged from three to 67) had ‘an absolute blast, not a moment of boredom’. Another comment: ‘On the outside it looked like a storybook castle with lavish gardens; on the inside, it had nicely renovated bathrooms, comfortable bedrooms and common areas.’ Couples will enjoy Haygarth (with a two-person bathtub) or the Gatehouse (a private garden, king-size four-poster bed). Children will appreciate the tree houses and Augill’s Little Cooks classes. Meals are eaten communally at a large oak table in front of ‘an invitingly warm log fire’. This year, a locally sourced ‘Four Counties’ à la carte menu has been introduced, with dishes like potted Morecambe shrimp; Lancashire fish pie, a creamy mash topping. The Yorkshire Dales and the northern lakes are close by, but there is no need to leave the castle: ‘You can spend an afternoon playing knights and princesses or just sit in the cinema watching a film with popcorn.’ (Tony Swindells, and others)
  • We held our wedding at the castle. It was a small gathering with our parents and children. It was absolutely amazing. The castle is so beautiful. Wendy and Simon and all of the lovely staff make you feel so welcome and looked after as if you're visiting friends or family. The food was tasty and well prepared, and the individual rooms were so different and unique. We made use of the little Art Deco cinema and the bar. Both parents and kids were blown away. A fabulous experience we will never forget.

  • Beautiful building, a warm welcome, champagne on the terrace (it was my wife's 50t). We felt very much at home. We made friends over dinner at the communal table and then relaxed in the conservatory bar later. Our stay was comfortable and rewarding.

  • We first stayed at Augill in September 2014 and our experience was so good we decided to book the whole castle for my 40th birthday party. Forty of my closest family and friends had exclusive use of the venue for 24hrs, and it was one of the most memorable events we have had. There is something here for everyone. We had ten children with us, who had not a moment of boredom, and 30 adults who partied as if they were children! Wendy, Simon and the team were on hand the whole time, and there was no request too troublesome. The food and service were excellent and the individual rooms left all our guests feeling they had enjoyed a unique stay.

  • Lovely relaxing stay. Gloriously comfy bed, simple home-cooked food. Very welcoming and accommodating for children, felt very happy to let our two seven-year-olds have free run of place (inside and out) without worrying. We used it as a base to enjoy Eden Valley and North Lakes countryside.
