'Unstuffy, not over-sophisticated but thoroughly dependable, it maintains its warm welcome, its feeling of cosiness and its remarkable value for money.' Praise this year from a returning guest to Alan and Louise Dinnes's village inn; Selina Procter is the new manager. The popular bar and wood-panelled lounge are 'inviting'; 'the long-serving staff are efficient and friendly'. Some of the bedrooms have views of the garden; ground-floor rooms near the bar might have some noise. 'Our large bedroom had a king-size bed with extra blankets and pillows; a comfortable armchair and sofa; a modern work table and wardrobe.' Chef Kev Hillyer's comfort foods - perhaps chicken, haggis and cured-bacon pie, carrot and swede purée - may be taken in the dining rooms or the bar. 'Everything is made on the premises and is nicely presented, delicious and served in generous portions.' 'Hearty' breakfasts, with 'well-prepared' eggs and 'first-rate' black pudding, 'to equip you for a day on the fells'. Less active guests can 'sit happily in the streamside garden, tucked away with the morning paper'. (Trevor Lockwood, Peter Anderson)
  • Lured by their two-day package. The welcome, especially the waiting staff, and the good value, as well as the proximity to Chatsworth meant that my disabled husband put up for the lack of a shower in the otherwise very attractive ground-floor room.

  • It remains one of my favourite hotels in the land. Continues to be dependable, unstuffy, warm and welcoming; still remarkably good value for money. Each bedroom is different: all are furnished for double occupancy; two are quite small the others are spacious. One member of my party used one of the three wheelchair-friendly ground-floor rooms and he was well satisfied; no view from the window, but large and comfortable, and with an inviting bed. Despite the liveliness of the hotel's bars none of us was troubled with noise much beyond 11 pm. The kitchen is a busy place - meals seem to be served almost constantly. We were very pleased with our breakfasts and dinners, tackling with gusto some pretty substantial portion. Smaller portions of most main dishes are available on request, the price appropriately reduced. The cooked breakfast are irresistible.

  • A very busy place but they appeared to cope, and dinner was excellent. So was breakfast though I could have done without the radio.

  • Our second visit. We had the same comfortable room. Reception and service as good as before. Food was excellent. It was good to hear the locals chatting in the bar.
