Howtown Hotel

‘A place to get away from it all.’ Guide inspectors in 2015 loved this stone-built Lake District hotel, which the Baldry family has run for more than a century. ‘It unashamedly sticks to its old-fashioned values; all the better for it. It is so retro, it’s almost trendy: the decor, the cooking style; the Lalique glass bowls on a window sill in the dining room, china sets in one of the three guest lounges.’ Bookings are made by telephone and confirmed in writing. In the simple bedrooms ‘everything is spotless, well decorated, not dowdy’. Modern equipment is absent: no Wi-Fi; no music; no mobile signal; no toiletries other than a bar of soap. A gong announces meals in the ‘beautifully laid’ dining room. ‘We had perfectly poached salmon and an excellent steak, with a good supply of vegetables served with silver spoons; the bread-and-butter pudding was light and delicious. Loose tea in a fine china pot is brought to your room before breakfast which has preserves in individual bowls, butter balls, proper toast.’ Packed lunches are available; superb walking from the door.
