The Five Arrows

Built on the site of a coaching inn to house the architects and craftsmen who built Waddesdon Manor, this half-timbered building is a small hotel with ‘good vibes’. It is run by the Rothschild family trust for the National Trust; Alex McEwen is the manager. ‘The staff were friendly, the room was comfortable, the food good,’ says a regular Guide correspondent this year. Five bedrooms recently added in a converted coach house are spacious: ‘Ours had a super king-size bed, a comfy leather armchair and a Windsor-style smaller chair; it was decorated in modern classic colours. It overlooked the main road; the faint hum of traffic did not bother us.’ Rooms in the main house are more traditional in style. There is no residents’ lounge, but in warm weather guests can sit in the courtyard garden. In the dining room, chef Karl Penny serves modern dishes: ‘We especially enjoyed crab and cod fishcakes; cherry tomato tartlet; a pudding of almond cake and pistachio ice cream.’ Breakfast has a ‘good’ cold buffet; a wide choice of hot dishes. • The staff were friendly, the room was comfortable, the food good;, and the hotel had good vibes. We had the last room, overlooking the main road. Traffic noise was a hum and did not bother us. The rooms are away from the main house so you would need an umbrella in bad weather. We enjoyed a drink in the courtyard (there seemed to be no residents’ lounge). And we enjoyed both dinner and breakfast (a good cold buffet and wide choice of cooked dishes).

  • A comfortable hotel with good rooms and extremely friendly and helpful staff. Although on a busy road the hotel is surprisingly peaceful inside and our bedroom in the courtyard was very quiet. Good food in the restaurant and a complimentary glass of champagne added a nice touch. Rather limited lounge space.
