Montagu Arms

In a pretty village within the New Forest national park, this Georgian country house is a ‘very special place’, says a visitor in 2015. ‘It may not have the trappings of some larger establishments, but we enjoy the ambience and the exceptional welcome and service.’ The oak-panelled public rooms are ‘country house in style and are well furnished’. In the formal Terrace restaurant, ‘the attention and service is professional but relaxed’. The chef, Matthew Tomkinson, has a Michelin star for his cooking of intricate dishes like pressed terrine of rabbit and black pudding, celeriac remoulade, liver parfait; wild South Coast sea bass, garden artichoke purée, serrano ham, red wine sauce. Lighter meals are served in the informal Monty’s Inn. The bedrooms might not be ‘the latest in design’, but they are comfortable; many have a view of the ‘picturesque’ garden, ‘which is a lovely place to relax’. Breakfast in the Terrace restaurant has eggs from the hotel’s own hens. Guests can use the SenSpa at a sister hotel, Careys Manor, in nearby Brockenhurst. ‘The location is perfect for country lovers.’ (Mary Coles). Montagu Arms is a member of Pride of Britain hotels.

  • Very special hotel. It doesn't have all the trappings of many larger establishments, and the bedroom and bathroom we choose to have each stay are not the latest in design, and a little cramped, but very comfortable with views of the garden. The public rooms are very country house and well furnished and we enjoy the ambience, the exceptional welcome and service, and to sit in the picturesque garden before dining in the restaurant where the attention and service is so professional but relaxed This along with the New Forest location with all it has to offer for country lovers makes it not far from perfect.

  • An impressive Georgian house in an attractive village. Our room was spacious and comfortable. The food was of a high standard with much care lavished on presentation. Service was good, though English was the second language for the largely French staff.

  • Four wonderful nights. The barman and the head waiter always spoke to us by name, providing a very personal service. The ambience is just right for Christmas ,and the food was a pleasure to eat.The hotel has its own hens and the breakfast eggs were a joy to eat.
