The Old Railway Station

On a disused railway line bordered by woodland, this B&B with a difference occupies a renovated Victorian station building and four restored Pullman carriages. Hosts Gudmund Olafsson and Catherine Stormont give a ‘warm welcome’ to guests, who check in at the original ticket office window. Most of the bedrooms are in the British-built carriages, each divided into two rooms with a separate entrance. Long and narrow, with Edwardian fittings and furnishings, they are ‘comfortable and well furnished. Our bathroom was surprisingly spacious, with a proper bath.’ Two larger rooms in the main building, reached by a spiral staircase, were refurbished this year, as was the waiting room. The nearby road can be busy, but visitors report ‘virtually no traffic at night; all we heard was owls’. There are leather-buttoned sofas and chairs, a wood-burning fireplace, ‘intriguing railwayana’ in the waiting room, where tea and coffee are served. Breakfast (‘splendid, unhurried’) is taken here or in the carriages or the waiting room. ‘Perfect scrambled eggs, excellent sausages, freshly ground coffee’. Evening meals can be found at a nearby pub (walking distance).

  • I recently stayed at The Old Railway Station, in the Pullman carriage Alicante. I found it quirky, clean, polite, charming, clean and comfortable. The staff are extremely polite, helpful, informative and the breakfast is wonderful.

  • A friendly welcome. Everything as described in the GJG. All very comfortable. An excellent breakfast cooked and served by a delightful lady.

  • A warm, welcoming building. The waiting room, where we took coffee, is a wonderful space with an atmosphere of well-organised clutter. Our carriage was comfortable and well furnished (you need a certain amount of agility). The bathroom was surprisingly spacious. The breakfasts were splendid and unhurried. Good value.
