Rose in Vale

In summer, swags of roses adorn the Doric porch of James and Sara Evans’s ‘elegant’ if much extended Georgian country house in a secluded valley, in the village of Mithian. ‘Tireless’ Sara Evans looks after everything front-of-house, the staff are ‘utterly charming’, say returning visitors this year. There has been a change in the kitchen. Joint head chefs James and Tom Bennett (‘not related’, strangely) make inventive use of seasonal, local produce in such dishes as duo of Cornish duck (breast and confit spring roll), fondant potato, dates, julienne of vegetables; roast monkfish, lemon, charred chorizo, samphire, saffron potato. ‘Loud pianola music’ was not liked. The bedrooms are individually styled. The Rose suite, with views over the wooded valley, has a four-poster bed; in the bathroom a double spa bath and a separate shower. Some ground-floor rooms have a wet room suitable for disabled guests. The solar-heated swimming pool is a big plus. ‘The staff were good at briefing us on the rip tides in the bay where we were competing in a bellyboarding championship.’
  • Standards of comfort and service usually come at a much higher price. It has large, well-planted grounds. Our room was a cosy refuge, large, with a super-comfy bed. Staff are well trained, polite, and efficient without seeming to hurry. Dinner was very good. Breakfast was top notch.

  • The hotel has had a new wing added, accessed by a ramp; a lift has also been added. Flat-screen TVs have been installed in bedrooms. Our room was large, the bed was comfortable, and there were white fluffy towels and bathrobes in the bathroom. Only basic tea bags and instant coffee. The dining room was large but not busy. A reasonable choice on the menu; starters were good but main courses were slightly overcooked. Bacon and sausages at breakfast were also overcooked but good bread and excellent muesli. D,B&B price is good value for money but there are several additional charges. An envelope is left in the room for staff tips. The staff were without exception very helpful and friendly.

  • Food and service first class. Reception very helpful and beds comfortable. But the bedroom design was poor.
