Soar Mill Cove Hotel

In extensive grounds above a sandy cove in an area of outstanding natural beauty, this ‘welcoming’ hotel has a ‘pleasant, settled feel’. The owner/manager Keith Makepeace has recently renovated the public areas and bedrooms. ‘It is much improved in looks since the last time we were there,’ said a visitor this year. ‘The restaurant is lighter, and the lounge has attractive seating. Both have large windows facing the view over sloping lawns, green meadows with sheep and cattle, and out to the sea.’ There is no background music. The chef, Ian MacDonald, serves a five-course menu (individual courses can be taken) of locally sourced produce with dishes like yellow-fin tuna, oriental spices; duo of cumin-spiced lamb, caramelised root vegetables, shallot purée, port and redcurrant sauce. Each of the bedrooms has a private patio with sun loungers. Family suites have a separate bedroom for children, and plenty of storybooks. Young visitors will find much to do if they can be dragged away from the beach: there is entertainment in the summer (movie nights, baking, etc); a games room has pool and table tennis. (CE)
  • Very friendly. Excellent service from all the staff. Good quality and varied dinner menu. A couple of tiny niggles: the plug didn't fit the basin properly, so the water ran out; and I had to ask for the replacement of three light bulbs. Our room was large and warm. It was a pity that we weren't able to make use of our private patio because of the weather. There is no longer an outdoor pool, but my swim each morning in the indoor pool was a highlight of our visit.

  • As regular visitors we are never disappointed. The welcome is warm, the food is good and the hotel is confortable. The outdoor pool, rarely used, has been replaced by a grassy bank and there are plans to improve the indoor poo.l

  • Stunning location - wonderful views and walks down to Soar Mill cove. Personal attention to detail from staff.
