Soar Mill Cove Hotel

From the home-made cream tea on arrival to the draw-on-me blackboard walls in the café, there is a 'welcoming' atmosphere at Keith Makepeace's child-friendly, family-run hotel. it stands above a secluded, sandy cove on the south Devon coast. Well-equipped bedrooms have French doors opening on to a private patio; some have views of the coast (binoculars, ideal for spotting dolphins, are available on request). Family suites have a separate bedroom for children, and plenty of storybooks to borrow. Dinners are 'a delight' in the bright restaurant, decorated in cool blues: there are 'high-quality and varied' menus; the fish - perhaps pan-roasted monkfish, Black Forest ham, wild mushrooms - is 'always excellent'. There is much to do in and around the hotel: the heated indoor saltwater pool (strikingly decorated with a wall-length panorama of Salcombe fishing boats) is a recent addition; the sun lounge has a good selection of books, magazines and board games; coasteering, sailing and surfing expeditions can be arranged. The dog-friendly beach is a stroll away; picnics are available for Coastal Path walks - crab sandwiches optional. (JT, MHB)
  • Very friendly. Excellent service from all the staff. Good quality and varied dinner menu. A couple of tiny niggles: the plug didn't fit the basin properly, so the water ran out; and I had to ask for the replacement of three light bulbs. Our room was large and warm. It was a pity that we weren't able to make use of our private patio because of the weather. There is no longer an outdoor pool, but my swim each morning in the indoor pool was a highlight of our visit.

  • As regular visitors we are never disappointed. The welcome is warm, the food is good and the hotel is confortable. The outdoor pool, rarely used, has been replaced by a grassy bank and there are plans to improve the indoor poo.l

  • Stunning location - wonderful views and walks down to Soar Mill cove. Personal attention to detail from staff.
