Moonfleet Manor

In ‘romantic’ Dorset countryside overlooking Chesil Beach, this ‘pretty’ Georgian house is part of the child-friendly Luxury Family Hotels group. Parents needn’t feel guilty as their children disappear to the twice-daily crèche, say inspectors. ‘It doesn’t feel like a dumping ground; they made papier mâché jewellery trees, and had a ball in the lovely playroom which was full of toys and dressing-up clothes.’ There is also much to keep children busy in the garden (a climbing frame and a sandpit); there are nightly family films in the cinema room. Morning coffee and afternoon tea are served in two large lounges, which have ‘big sofas, piles of newspapers’; a family snug has games and books. Families can ask for extra beds in the parents’ bedroom, or have an interconnecting room for the children. The smallest children can take high tea at 5 pm; families can eat together until 7.30, when ‘exhausted’ parents can dine alone (listening devices are available). Breakfast (‘awesome’, said a five-year-old visitor) has a big buffet with freshly squeezed juice, ‘delicious’ jams and cereals; ‘very good’ cooked options.
  • A treat for families with young children, though we would not call it luxury. The facilities for children were excellent. Communicating bedrooms, high teas, creche, play activities both indoors and out, Breakfast Club, etc. Reception and bedrooms were spacious and interestingly furnished, and had a pleasant, relaxing feeling. The food, though not exceptional, was acceptable but we thought it expensive. The staff were courteous and friendly.
