Star Castle

César award in 2009

There are ‘stunningly beautiful views across the islands’ from the Francis family’s hotel, in a star-shaped, 16th-century castle on Garrison Hill. James Francis is the manager; long-serving staff are ‘friendly and helpful’. Bedrooms are in the castle and single-storey buildings in the grounds (a short open-air walk away); garden suites have a veranda. ‘My single Guard House room on the ramparts had tiny windows looking out on to the harbour. On the windowsill, a pewter tankard with fresh dahlias was a nice touch.’ Guests have a choice of places to eat: the summertime Conservatory specialises in seafood; the ‘atmospheric and historic’ Castle restaurant has a ‘wonderful’ candlelit ambience and ‘excellent’ food (perhaps ‘very good’ seared venison). At breakfast, ‘delicious’ bacon and tomatoes are ‘cooked to perfection’. The hotel is a ten-minute walk up a hill from the harbour; for guests arriving by ferry, luggage is brought from the boat to the room. Robert Francis, James’s father, has established a vineyard on the island. The first bottles were reserved for hotel guests to enjoy with lobster caught ‘by Robert himself’.
  • From our arrival and throughout our stay, staff were unfailingly helpful and friendly. Housekeeping standards high, the room very comfortable, pleasant sitting area - and a very nice veranda with loungers and a fabulous outlook. We liked the choice of restaurants and menus. The meals were all very well presented, the fish particularly good and – a benefit to those who cannot always face a five course meal – option for choosing two starters or whatever permutation diners wanted. No Musak!

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit. It was clearly a happy ship; the staff seemed like a cohesive, contented, well-managed team, eager to please. There was a significant number of loyal "returners" among the guests, to the extent that we felt a little excluded from the club at times. Our accommodation was in one of the garden suites. The bedroom was fine and comfortable, if a little small. The food was of a very high standard throughout the week, in terms of both choice and quality. Our only reservation was that some choices ran out if you were booked into a later time slot. We expected superb fish dishes, and they were, but the meat offerings were equally wonderful. Breakfasts were consistently excellent the smoked haddock was especially memorable. The location of the hotel was perfect, with stunning views. It was not a cheap week's holiday, but nevertheless it was good value for money.

  • We had a marvellous 4 nights and cannot recomend the hotel more highly. We had a look at the Garden Rooms and in summer would be the place to stay even though the decor could be described as slightly old fashioned. However views to die for. For this time of year we were grateful to be in the Castle so we did not have to brave the weather to make our room. The dinner was fantastic as was the service and the staff were just what one would hope for. The 3 South Afrian guys and the girl from Devon were great! A great Breakfast too
