Roundwood House

At their handsome family home, a Palladian villa at the foot of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, Paddy and Hannah Flynn welcome guests in relaxed house-party style. ‘Lovely people’, they might be joined by a welcoming committee of pets to greet visitors, who are offered tea and home-made biscuits by a log fire in the drawing room, which has ‘an intimate feel, with sofas and chairs grouped together’. ‘Think of dining as going to a dinner party with friends you haven’t met yet,’ says Paddy Flynn, who cooks dishes with local and seasonal ingredients on a five-course menu. It is generally taken communally (you can opt to eat privately in the study). A simpler three-course supper is usually available; or an option to take a bowl of soup with an artisan cheese platter. A separate tea can be prepared for children. The bedrooms in the main house are spacious; smaller rooms in the Yellow House (an older building) face a walled garden. Breakfast has a generous sideboard with breads, yogurt, muesli and fruit compote (all home-made); ‘superb mushrooms on toast with blue cheese’.
  • Last Friday we went to Roundwood House again. They were doing a Halloween evening, most unusual and entertaining: a buffet dinner, a play, ghost stories, dozens of candles. Our room had been repainted since our last stay and its bathroom upgraded. The orange juice at breakfast was most definitely freshly squeezed! Hannah makes her own soda bread: Paddy's mushrooms with blue cheese were served on lovely toast.
