‘Friendly’ staff, ‘comfortable’ rooms and ‘excellent’ food draw visitors to this 17th-century coaching inn ‘with a modern twist’. Robert Smith is the ‘hands-on’ owner/manager. Pick a traditionally furnished bedroom in the ‘charming’ stone building, or a more up-to-date one in the refurbished stable block; expect extras such as cookies and a decanter of sherry in all of them (though ‘a luggage rack would be welcome’). ‘My large superior room in the extension was well furnished in a contemporary style; the shower room was clean and modern.’ Discuss bedroom choices before booking: some guests this year thought their annexe room sombre; others found in-room amenities lacking.Dine on chef James Hitchman’s ‘satisfying’ dishes, served in the restaurants, on the garden terrace or by the log fire in the bar. Local game and Cotswold meat (perhaps Cotswold ale and honey-glazed pork belly, boulangère potatoes, hogs pudding) are highlights.
