Good Hotel Guide Review
In pretty grounds on the banks of the River Vartry – a charming spot for a picnic or an alfresco G&T – this rambling coaching inn retains all the character of a bygone age. Owned by the same family for five generations, it is said to be the longest-running inn in Ireland. Today, brothers Richard and Tom Gelletlie are at the helm. Antiques, old prints and unabashed swathes of chintz are put to good use in the spacious bedrooms (the creaking floorboards add to the charm); many rooms overlook the garden. At lunch and dinner, chef Martin Barry relies on seasonal produce for his traditional menus. Sunday luncheon is a feast. Drawing room, lounge, bar, restaurant. Private dining room. 2-acre garden in 5-acre grounds (river walks). Free Wi-Fi, in-room TV (Freeview). No background music. Children and dogs (by arrangement) welcomed. 2 km SE of Ashford. Golf, tennis, riding, sandy beach, fishing nearby. 16 bedrooms (1 on ground floor). Per person B&B from €65, D,B&B from €95. Closed 24–26 Dec.
