Good Hotel Guide Review
‘It was a total joy to return,’ write readers this year on their fourth visit to Tracey Baylis and Alex Read’s B&B in a rural hamlet. ‘Their attention to detail is outstanding. They sensed that we preferred cups and saucers to mugs, and guess what…?’ The extended stone cottage has an open-plan lounge/dining room with a wood-burning stove; glass doors open on to the terrace. Guests relax in bedrooms equipped with a king-size bed, and a well-stocked tea tray with coffee, teas, infusions and shortbread. Each room is different: the Oak room, in the heart of the house, has a sofa bed to accommodate a family; Clay has a balcony with views of garden and countryside. Tracey Baylis, who has worked for Michelin-starred chef Shaun Hill, cooks ‘delicious’ dinners for appreciative visitors. Using local, home-grown and organic ingredients, her traditional dishes might include baked mushrooms, Shropshire blue cheese; duck breast, red wine, blackcurrant. In the morning, a generous breakfast is served, with home-made bread and preserves; ‘a large choice’ of cooked dishes. The gastronomic mecca of Ludlow is five and a half miles away. (David Bartley)
