Good Hotel Guide Review

‘We enjoyed staying here.’ Overlooking Elter Water, Mark and Ruth Jones’s country hotel is liked for its ‘helpful’ staff, ‘stunning’ views and ‘excellent’ food. It is a family affair: daughter Aimee is the ‘charming’ manager; son Edward is chef. Take tea and cake by the ‘beautiful’ stone fireplace when you arrive – there’s a ‘traditional country atmosphere’, with stuffed birds and ‘interesting’ pictures, in the ‘comfortable’ lounge and two bars. Elegant bedrooms (some small) have plenty of storage; most have views of Eltermere or the Langdale peaks. In the restaurant, chef Edward Jones’s ‘delicious’ modern European cooking – perhaps including ‘amazing’ lamb chops – is ‘nicely served and presented’. Overindulged? Opt for a ‘very refreshing fruit jelly’ to top it off. Head out on country walks from the front door; row into the lake from the private jetty. 2 lounges, bar, restaurant; terrace. Free Wi-Fi (in public areas). Contemporary background music (‘not too much of a bother’). 3-acre garden. Complimentary passes for the spa at the Langdale Hotel (pool, hot tub, steam room), 10 mins’ walk away. 2 miles from Grasmere. 12 bedrooms. Per room B&B £145–£295. Set dinner £28.50; à la carte £30–£40. Closed Christmas and New Year (restaurant open New Year’s Eve). 2-night min. stay at weekends.

'This historic e building was the home of the founder of the gunpowder industry in the area. Interesting decor and pictures. Comfortable lounges. Pretty garden; stunning views. The food was excellent: nicely served and presented. There is contemporary music, a bit of a black mark but not too much of a bother. There was the option of eating in the bar, which is quite noisy. Good wine list but a bit expensive. Tasty chocolates afterwards. The staff were very helpful. The bedroom was a bit small but the roll-top bath was too deep, hard to get in and out.
